Rehabilitation Technology is the application of technologies, engineering methodologies, ergonomics, and scientific principles to meet the home, work, and computer access needs, as well as the independent living needs of individuals with disabilities, injuries, and the effects of aging.
Through the use of a variety of assistive and adaptive technology, its purpose is to eliminate barriers, improve access and function, and enhance opportunities in education, rehabilitation, employment, transportation, independent living, and recreation. Rehabilitation technology services are provided for people with moderate to severe mobility, learning, emotional, cognitive, visual, hearing, neurological, neuromuscular, and other disabilities.
A Rehabilitation Technologist provides technical expertise that is founded in addressing work, home, computer, and independence-related accessibility issues, in order to enhance functional abilities and access. They do so by eliminating or minimizing functional limitations imposed by environments, disability, injury, or an effect of aging.
